Interaction Ritual, 2008

Description

Emily is drawn to strange behaviour, out of place gestures and unexpected meetings within the public realm. After observing and documenting them with photography and film she uses what she finds as a script for performance. Automatic actions and reactions are taken, learned, repeated and magnified. Collage, repetition and montage are important to her practice, using them to create a sense of rhythm which gives a new importance to overlooked gestures and the rhythm in everyday life.

Interaction Ritual shows five people passing back and forth across the screen, interacting with each other and exchanging objects. The highly choreographed movements become almost a mock documentation of how people behave, exaggerating actions that would seem so commonplace in a different context.
