Stacey Allen
Stiff Upper Lip, 2008
Description
Throughout Allen's work there are underlying themes of humour, observation of the everyday and the question of where the artist should be in society. Recently she has been working with the idea of the 'English reserve' and how this is apparent in herself and local culture. Her creative process usually begins with phrases made common by English culture and using them as a directive for the work. In presenting these phrases literally, she hopes to highlight the absurdity of the everyday and in doing so reveal the exotic and the eccentric of the English language and culture.
"Stiff Upper Lip is a parody on the polarity of British culture. I give the audience a visual representation of the phrase by using a brace created to keep my upper lip stiff. The brace creates a grotesque profile and makes me speak and act in a way that its at odds with what the phrase suggests. I also use a gum-shield to create the same effect.By using both of these items I address the stereotypical view of the British upper and lower classes, I unite these two different views by singing the National Anthem,a song used for various occasions including at sporting events and for more austere occasions."
Allen has performed live at Arts@Trinity Church, Leeds, and across the country.
